Essential plus

During this period of shifting trade policies, rising tariffs, and unpredictability, Canadian exporters and especially those who act as non-resident importers into the U.S. face enormous challenges that demand new strategies. This training webinar is designed to help Canadian businesses, who export to the U.S., navigate the new tariff landscape and how to implement practical procedures to mitigate cross-border costs while maintaining compliance with U.S. Customs requirements.

Using a PowerPoint presentation, reference materials and real-life examples, our customs expert will cover the following topics:

  • Overview of U.S. tariff measures (IEEPA Tariffs, §232 Tariffs, §301 Tariffs, etc.)
  • Which type of goods are targeted by which type of tariff
  • What does “stackability” of tariffs mean?
  • Understanding and verifying your 7501 Summary Entry Forms
  • Duty Mitigation (USMCA, Chapter 98, Valuation, Temporary Imports, etc.)
  • §232 Tariffs – Breakout of material content (Steel, Aluminum, Copper)
  • The importance of traceability of country of “Melt & Pour” or country of “Smelt & Cast”
  • Compliance best practices
  • Maintaining sufficiency of your annual continuous bond
  • Preparing for the uptick in U.S. CBP Audits, Requests for Information, and Notices of Action
  • Understanding U.S. CBP processes for post-entry corrections and/or refunds
Who is the target audience
  • Canadian manufacturers and/or exporters who export goods to the USA
  • Canadian manufacturers and/or exporters who act as non-resident importers of record in the USA (i.e. Canadian companies who handle customs clearance of their exported goods through U.S. Customs and Border Protection)
  • Canadian businesses who sell goods into the USA
Specific objectives
  • Learn how to determine whether your goods will be targeted by additional tariffs
  • Find out about sources where to find guidelines regarding U.S. tariffs
  • Better understand the additional information and/or documents that customs brokers now require to clear merchandise efficiently through the U.S. border
  • Discover some of the ways to exempt and/or reduce additional tariffs on goods imported into the USA
  • If you claim a preference or a special provision that exempts or reduces applicable tariffs on your goods, know how to prepare yourself to be able to demonstrate eligibility to the tariff reduction or exemption when U.S. CBP audits your claim
Additional notes
  • USMCA means the U.S. – Mexico Canada Agreement (synonymous with CUSMA and T-MEC)
  • U.S. CBP means U.S. Customs & Border Protection
